Robot SpaceLand

Produced for Vivid Sydney 2019, Robot SpaceLand transformed Darling Harbour into a large-scale immersive precinct built from reclaimed industrial materials, kinetic sculpture, lighting, movement, and narrative-driven environmental design.

Created by XYZ Dimensions as a speculative post-industrial world, Robot SpaceLand depicted an army of mechanised robots transforming an industrial wasteland into an environment habitable for humans.

At the centre of the installation stood EcoBot — a towering 16-metre mechatronic robot holding an actual car in its claw, constructed from reclaimed car parts and upcycled industrial waste streams. Covered in over half a kilometre of addressable LED lighting, with moving lights and laser effects for eyes, EcoBot became one of the defining visual landmarks of Vivid Sydney’s 10th anniversary year.

Surrounding EcoBot, an army of mechanised robots populated the precinct through large-scale sculpture, lighting, scenic fabrication, and immersive environmental storytelling designed to operate at true city scale.

Designed as a modular large-scale installation system, the project was prefabricated offsite and engineered for disassembly, transport, and rapid deployment within complex public environments.

Following its presentation at Vivid Sydney, Robot SpaceLand later evolved into a touring installation exhibited across multiple cities.

Presented across the full duration of Vivid Sydney’s 10th anniversary year, the installation formed part of a festival attended by more than four million visitors.
